Homework: Choose objects and make sketches for Color with Meaning
Exercise Four: Color with Meaning
Find three objects that are of a similar color. In your sketchbook, make quick thumbnail sketches of them to determine interesting compositions for a small painting. Then, write about how they actually differ in color. Write about why you think that each is the particular shade of that color. Of what materials do the objects’ surfaces consist? Has age affected their appearance? If one is a natural object, does its color provide some biological advantage? If manmade, is there a marketing strategy behind its color? How do you feel about the color/each object’s particular version of the color? What associations do you have with the color(s)? After making your color observations and assessments, make a small painting of the objects (no larger than 16 in. in either direction), taking various ideas such as these into account.
