Beginning Painting and Drawing Week 3

Discuss Ways of Seeing, part 1
Berger points out what is involved in seeing, and how the way we see things is determined by what we know. He goes on to argue that the real meaning of many images has been obscured by academics, changed by photographic reproduction and distorted by monetary value.

Exercise Two: Shapes and Shadows

In the still life prepared for this exercise, there are a variety of objects of similar surface color. The presence of a strong light source results in a wide variety of effects. It is the students’ challenge to examine and respond to such visual features as composition (the dynamic arrangement of positive and negative space), geometric perspective (representing the spatial relationships between objects and their sides as they may appear to the eye), modulation (subtle shifts in color and/or value from one planar surface to another), contrast, subtlety, and chiaroscuro (the effects of light and shade). For this assignment students may chose either wet or dry medium.
Good start, good composition
